Utilities and Industrial

In Tanzania, the major sources of commercial energy are oil, hydro power and coal. Coal and hydro are domestic resources, but oil has to be imported.

Recent annual growth in Tanzania's energy demand has averaged between 7 and 9 percent. Over the next ten years, peak electrical demand is forecast to increase from about 5,530 MW to close to 1,000 MW. This forecast growth presents enormous opportunity to replace increased use of coal and oil with domestic natural gas.

The adjoining countries of Kenya  and Uganda are also forecasting significant increases in electrical demand, which could be met with natural gas from Tanzania if new pipelines and/or transmission lines were constructed and additional reserves are discovered. Kenya is currently forecasting growth of approximately 150 MW per year.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

To further expand gas sales, Orca is planning, in collaboration with Tanzanian Petroleum Development Corporation (TDPC), to commence the sale of CNG to industrial customers and to markets that are not located near the existing distribution pipeline. These new CNG markets include all of the major hotels in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
